THE NAME BEHIND THE NEEDLE

Back in 2010, Nyoman was going through a tough time. The one thing that kept him going? Memories of his mom—her hardworking hands, her quiet strength. That’s why he named his tattoo studio Mother Ink—to honor her.

From a small tattoo shop slowly grew into something bigger. Now, it’s a family business, relatives work alongside him managing the studio. Together, they keep the same belief: A tattoo should mean something, just like the family behind it.

BUILT BY HAND, GUIDED BY HEART

What started as a solo struggle grew into a shared space. Artists who believed in the same thing joined: that tattoos should mean more. No factory-line work—just careful, intentional ink for people who wear their stories.

WHY WE STAY SMALL

Hundreds of tattoos later, we still operate like it’s 2010: one conversation at a time. Because good tattoos aren’t about trends—they’re about trust.

“Permanent marks, made with patience.”

Ink History

THE BIRTH OF MODERN INK, FROM ANCIENT RITUAL TO LIVING ART

Long before they became symbols of rebellion or fashion, tattoos were sacred. The oldest known tattooed skin recorded belongs to Ötzi the Iceman, a 5,300-year-old mummy whose markings may have been medicinal or spiritual. From Egypt’s priestesses to Polynesia’s warriors, ink was never just decoration—it was identity, protection, and a bridge between worlds.

In Bali, tattoos were never mere adornment—they were a dialogue with the unseen. Long before tourists arrived, the island’s ancient ink traditions served as spiritual contracts. Balinese Hinduism, woven with animist beliefs, saw the body as a canvas for divine protection.

Tattoos crossed oceans with explorers, becoming badges of survival. Sailors in the 1700s collected ink as proof of their journeys. By the 20th century, tattoos were adopted by outsiders: rebels, bikers, and artists. What was once taboo became a language of resilience.

Now, tattoos are as diverse as the people who wear them. A Balinese motif honors a transformative trip. A minimalist line marks quiet strength. A sleeve becomes a diary. At Mother Ink Bali, we believe ink should carry meaning—whether it’s a tribute to your journey, a whisper of your past, or a declaration for your future.
